Stories That Sing
With our 35th Annual Spring Concert still a recent memory, we found ourselves filled with pride, joy, and a little nostalgia. Among the hundreds of young voices that graced the stage were nine remarkable seniors who are now turning the page on an unforgettable chapter in their lives with the San Diego Children’s Choir.
From singing against the stunning backdrop of the Carlsbad Flower Fields to performing masterpieces with the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus and the San Diego Symphony, to singing the National Anthem at Petco Park, the San Diego Children’s Choir’s has an exciting calendar full of events for the community to enjoy!
The benefits of youth choral singing are well documented in research studies and in the most recent Chorus America 2009 and 2019 Impact Reports, and we know them from witnessing this growth firsthand and from annual parent surveys. But what about the long-term impact of choral singing, particularly in those who sing in San Diego Children’s Choir (SDCC)? Can the benefits received while group singing as a child endure through adulthood? From a recently conducted alumni survey, we learned the answer is “yes”!
School is back in session and so is the San Diego Children’s Choir! All our core programs have begun: Ensemble, School Outreach, Early Years, and Toddler Time. In addition, this month marks the 10 year SDCC anniversary of our esteemed Artistic Director, Ruthie Millgard! Join us in celebrating Ruthie’s decade-long leadership with SDCC, and enjoy learning a little more about her time with the organization.
As our season and the academic school year come to a close, we want to recognize and celebrate our choristers graduating high school. These talented young individuals have been an integral part of our Choir community for years, and we're so proud of their incredible journeys during their time with us.
Anyone who knows the San Diego Children’s Choir, knows Margie Orem, Apprentice Choir Director, Preparatory Choir’s Associate Director, outreach and early music education specialist, and all around amazing contributor. We recently sat down with Margie to talk about how her role is changing and why she is excited about the future.
