Our Preparatory Choir is our youngest ensemble level for beginning singers/music readers and requires no audition. The choir performs locally 4-6 times per year, allowing your child the chance to shine.

Weekly Rehearsal Schedule and Locations

Fall Semester Schedule: August 30 - December 5, 2026
Spring Semester Schedule: Late January - May, 2027

Meets one time a week at the following locations. Parents select their preferred site upon registration.

Weekly rehearsals consist of up to 20 students at each site, with the full ensemble gathering to rehearse together at least once per semester


Curriculum & SKILLS LEARNED

  • Children joining Preparatory Choir typically have little to no prior musical experience

  • Choristers learn basic vocal techniques such as posture, resonance and breathing

  • Children develop an understanding of pitch through body mapping and beginning solfège as a preparation for sight-reading 

  • They sing unison, rounds and partner songs in multiple languages and are introduced to performance skills, including some memory-based movement. Repertoire changes every semester


Performances and other events

  • Introductory participation at two major SDCC concerts per year (Winter and Spring) with auditioned upper level choirs

  • 1-2 "All Together" rehearsals per semester (for all sites to rehearse together)

  • 2-3 additional performances per semester, mostly optional


Tuition and Fees

  • Annual Registration Fee* ($45) + Uniform Purchase (SDCC t-shirt, black slacks or skirt, jeans and shoes) + Concert Tickets ($0-$45 per concert)
