How To Set Your Child Apart in the College Admissions Process

The San Diego Children’s Choir’s Intermediate Ensemble recently sat down with longstanding college advisor and SDCC alum parent Jeanette Wright of Wright College Consulting to hear more about the current state of college entrance requirements. The 5th–8th graders and their parents heard how they can set themselves apart during the application process and had a chance to ask questions.  Here is a summary of Jeanette’s Top 15 Tips.   1. Take advanced courses when possible

  2. Get good grades 

  3. Take standardized tests like ACT and SAT

  4. Get involved in extracurricular activities (join choir!) - depth is more important than breadth

  5. Understand requirements of the written essay

  6. Develop leadership skills

  7. Get good recommendations from teachers

  8. Identify and develop special talents (like singing!)

  9. Display intellectual curiosity

  10. Demonstrate character and values and articulate what you bring to the college community

  11. Show enthusiasm for the school where you are applying

  12. Get a job

  13. Volunteer

  14. Research colleges to see if they are right for you 

  15. Pay attention to high school deadlines
