Auditions

Membership in the Choir is by audition. The purpose of the audition is to insure the potential chorister has a healthy voice and can sing on pitch. Audition appointments are held in June. Appointments are made in May by calling the Choir office at (858) 587-1087 or by requesting an audition using our contact form.

Auditions are brief, five to ten minutes. Phrases and scales are played on a piano and the child is asked to sing them. No preparation is necessary. The auditions are held individually at the piano with each child. Parents may remain in the room if the child wishes.

Membership

Enrollment in the Choir is for the school year (September to June). Each member is expected to remain active and committed to the program for the entire school year.

Tuition

There is a yearly registration fee of $25. The tuition fee is graduated depending on Choir level - $350 per year for Preparatory Level Choristers, $450 per year for Intermediate Level Choristers, and $550 per year for Concert and Youth level Choristers.

Half the tuition fee is due on August 1st and the remainder due on November 1st. The policy of the Choir is to keep tuition affordable to all members of our community. Scholarships are available for families of low income.

Tuition fees pay less than one-half the cost of operating the Choir. The remainder is obtained by government support, earned income, and individual, foundation, and corporate contributions.

Uniforms

Uniform fitting is available at our Kick-Off Party held in September of each year and Concert Dress must be obtained prior to our performances beginning the end of November.

Concert dress for the Preparatory, Intermediate, and Concert Choirs consists of navy skirts and pants, white oxford-cloth button-down collar shirts, and black shoes. The Preparatory Choirs wears red ties and red bows, the Intermediate Choir wears the same and add a vest, and the Concert Choir wears pasley ties and a vest.

Concert Dress for the Youth Choir consists of green and black gowns for the girls and black tuxedos for the boys.

Attendance

  • Performances: Attendance is required at all scheduled performances. Choristers, on receiving the initial schedule for the year, should submit a written schedule of conflicts, if any, as soon as possible to the Music Director. In addition, last-minute conflicts should be reported to the Performance Coordinator for their particular choir.

Prior to each event, Choristers will receive at rehearsals a flyer containing details of the event, such as call times, uniform dress and directions.

  • Rehearsals: Membership in the San Diego Children's Choir is a commitment of faithful, consistent, and punctual attendance. It is expected that each rehearsal takes a very high priority in each Chorister's life. Parents and guests are welcome to attend and listen.

A member of the Choir may be excused for legitimate conflicts by calling the Choir office, (858) 587-1087, at least one hour prior to a rehearsal. Also, a Concert or Preparatory Chorister that is unable to rehearse with his/her choir may attend a rehearsal at another branch during the week.

Final rehearsals before any concert are mandatory. An absence from a final rehearsal, for any reason, may result in the chorister not singing the corresponding concert.

Additional details on performance and rehearsal procedures and policy can be found in the San Diego Children's Choir Handbook.
