We arrived in Skagway and left the ship after a quick breakfast. After strolling through town, we headed to Lake Dewey Trail and slowly made our way uphill to Lower Lake Dewey. Shortly after our invigorating and scenic hike we enjoyed a few hours of shopping for souvenirs in the small shops. We boarded the ship and had lunch in the Lido Restaurant before heading back to town. A tour bus that would take us to the Klondike Dredge arrived, and we met Dynamite Dean, our tour guide. He gave us the 411 on Skagway, pointing out the highlights of the town: the school, the health clinic (which unfortunately does not have a doctor on staff, you have to go to Juneau in order to see a regular physician). At the Dredge we were entertained by an employee who performed tunes native to Alaska on a saw, spoons, a harmonica and a concertina. We were then taken on a tour of the dredge along the Skagway River; stopping to admire the mechanism that separated gold nuggets from debris and rock. After a demonstration by our tour guide, we were given the chance to strike it rich and pan for our own gold nuggets. Before leaving Skagway, the youth choir girls and Mr. Herman posed and took a picture. We were dressed-up in costumes from the late 19th century that were very reminiscent of frontier life. Once onboard the ship, we returned to our rooms and prepared ourselves for a casual dinner in the dining room. After dinner, we returned to our rooms and changed before going to a 10:15 pm show in the Vista Lounge. A woman named Alfreda and a live band performed a tribute to the divas: Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Barbara Streisand, Aretha Franklin etc. After the show we went to the teen loft and mingled with other teenagers on the ship. Following curfew, we made our way back to our rooms and prepared ourselves for another eventful day.
