The plane ride, as someone once said so eloquently, was like a Grateful Dead concert.

After the plane ride and retrieving our copious amounts of baggage, we had to go through immigration and customs (“What are you doing in Canada?”). Once through customs, we all got onto this gigantic bus to take us to the cruise ship. You know it’s a REALLY bad sign, though, when the first thing the bus driver says to you is, “My name is Jack. It’s okay to say, ‘Hi Jack,’ ‘cause I’ve got the doors closed.” The bus ride took about half an hour, during which we experienced more bad jokes and forced ourselves to laugh at them.

Eventually we got to the cruise ship and said goodbye to dear old Jack. However, before we could even get on the ship, we had to go through even MORE customs. At this point, we were really hungry. We got through everything, ate in a hurry, then went to go to a “Safety Drill” which involved running through the halls wearing really ugly lifejackets, lining up on the deck with a bazillion other passengers, waiting until they called all our room numbers, and then learning the correct way to put on the ugly lifejackets.

After being released from our “Safety Drill” captors, we were free to roam around the ship, which we took full advantage of. We went to the Sports Deck and played basketball, we went to the Teens Lounge and danced to really weird 80’s music, we went to the Queen’s Room and watched part of a movie, and then we checked out the library and the shops. We saw just how beautiful the ship is during our explorations, complete with lounge chairs, art, and a fantastic view.

At 7:45 we went to dinner and experienced the weirdness of not being given a bill (the food is already paid for). A few of us wanted to go to the gym afterwards, but were sorely disappointed when we found it closed. We explored around that area for a while, met some other kids our age staying on the ship, then changed out of our gym clothes and headed up to the Teens Lounge for the orientation. We got to dance and hang out for a while, but then we had to go back to our rooms for bed. We were entirely brilliant, though, and managed to lock ourselves out of our room, so Mrs. Smith went to the Front Desk and got us a new key.

After getting back in with minimal giggling, we called it quits and went to bed.

Respectfully submitted by Ali Icenhower, Allie Smith, and Anneke Street
